Description:
Dawn of Winter at Lake Tahoe Lake Tahoe Placer County, California ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ See this same location in a penny postcard from the late 1800's! www.usgwarchives.org/ca/placer/postcards/lktwin.jpg Is that the same tree on the right? It is amazing that I shot this scene before discovering the postcard image. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A thin layer of fog hovers over the surface of Lake Tahoe on this very crisp morning just a few days prior to the winter solstice. The dawn is a fitting symbol of the coming winter though the frigid temperature and blanket of fresh snow make me feel like autumn has long since passed. On the distant shore are twinkling lights from towering hotels and casinos in Stateline, Nevada. The white lights on the mountain are the workings of Heavenly Valley Ski Resort. The celestial objects also display their grandeur. The crescent moon (distorted by long exposure) is rising above the horizon at dawn. The planet Jupiter is the second brightest object in the sky, just above and to the left of the moon. The two stars above Jupiter are in the constellation Scorpius. Mars is barely visible just above the horizon, below and to the left of Jupiter. Mercury is also rising but is just below the horizon. There is so much to see and feel, yet my mind compacts it all into a singular thought; the glorious dawn of a new day. _____________________________________ © 2006 GDA Photography, All Rights Reserved You do NOT have the right to copy, print, download, display, alter, blog, stream or otherwise use this photo or caption in any manner without the express written consent of the copyright holder. This is an amazing shot. I am only been recently taking my own photos of the planets and stars but I am very impressed with the effort and timing of this photo. I hope to see more of your photography.

Another perfect photo! I've been into Astronomy since I was little and always love seeing photos of stars and the moon... This is so well captured... It blows me away... Interestingly, the camera you shot this with is the camera I'm purchasing next month. I've heard great things about it and am excited to get out there and make some picture magic happen...

Very cool. Check out or Lake Tahoe Real Estate Blog. www.laketahoerealestateblog.com. Every now and then we've got something nice to look at here too, but nothing so far as excellent as this photograph.

this is absolutely magical, and your writing adds to the feel of it. I disagree with cropping it, I think it is perfect as it is. well done!

That's incredibly beautiful. I love the layer of fog . . . makes this very painterly indeed. Lovely night scene, Gary!

Thanks for the comments Stafan, Anton and Ingo. It was 3º F (-16º C) out there, so this was a REALLY cold shoot for me. Anton ... good suggestion. I have several versions zoomed-in across the lake, and one of this particular exposure cropped. They leave much less negative space and do look good. I chose to post this version since it most closely represented the way I saw and felt the scene in person. Cold and lonely!

amazing and beautiful, still wondering about the snow... ...we have none (yet) here in Germany :-| The World Through My Eyes

anton980 says :18/Dec/2006 16:21:56
I like the colors, but there's so much negative space.. Maybe try to crop the bottom out a little?
